General FAQ

What is SMPS?

SMPS refers to Switched Mode Power Supply or Switching Mode Power Supply. Most modern power supplies are Switched Mode, so when browsing our range, we typically just refer to these as power supplies.

What is a Linear Power Supply?

A linear power supply is still a power supply but uses an older conversion method to convert AC to DC power. Not many are manufactured now, if at all. If you have linear power supplies that you are replacing, contact us so we can advise you further.

What is a DC Transformer?

When asked for a DC transformer, we would typically refer to an AC/DC power supply. A transformer takes an AC input to AC output, whereas a power supply takes AC input to a DC output. Unlike a transformer, a DC power supply will have a set DC output that will not vary if the input voltage varies. If the input voltage is within the input voltage range, the DC output will not increase or decrease.

What is a DC to DC Transformer?

We would typically refer to these as a DC/DC converter. A transformer is AC input to AC output, and we would typically refer to a DC input to DC output as a DC/DC converter. A DC/DC converter will supply a set DC output which won’t vary, so long as the input voltage is within it’s set input voltage range.

What is a DC/DC Inverter?

We would typically refer to these as a DC/DC converter. If you are looking for a DC input to a DC output, these are under our DC/DC converter range.
